Swami Vivekananda

Swami Vivekananda was a great social reformer and pioneer of the national movement of modern India. His earlier name was Narendranath Datta. He was born in Kolkata on 12th January, 1863. His father, Biswanath Datta was an attorney at Kolkata High Court. From his school life Narendranath was a meritorious student. He was a student of Metropolitan Institution from where he passed the Matriculation Examination in 1879. He passed the F.A. examination in 1881 and the B.A. in 1884 from the Scottish Church College. From his student life he had a great curiosity for knowing God and that was satisfied when he met the great religious teacher, Sri Ramakrishna, in 1886. The meeting was a turning point in his life. He became a Sannyasi and became known as Swami Vivekananda. After the death of his 'guru', Vivekananda set out touring all over India. The misery and illiteracy of the masses touched him deeply. In 1895, he attended the Religious Parliament at Chicago and delivered a momentous speech upholding the greatness of the Hindu Religion. After his tour in Europe he came back to India and established Ramakrishna Mission in 1897, and Belur Math in 1898. Though Vivekananda passed away in 1902 at the age of 39, he influenced and still influences powerfully the minds of many in India.
